First and foremost, please know that all of these are recommendations from one mom to another.
Everything I share here is what has worked best for us, and is in no way required, or the only good option available.
Now as you may already know, we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. My favourite quote is " there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."
So here are some recommendations that will help us enjoy all of the seasons outdoors.
FOOTWEAR
My biggest recommendation is to look for flexible soles and a wide toe box to keep little feet comfortable.
I try to opt for shoes labeled as 'barefoot' for my kids because they check both of those boxes. Their toes can move freely, they use their whole foot to walk, and so they can move more freely.
One brand we have loved for all season of shoes is 'Jan & Jul" from Amazon. Their water/running shoes for summer are a favourite! I have also tried their rainboots, and winter boots which are great right up until we get into super cold weather. *bonus - they are Canadian*
For the super frigid months, I love Stonz Trek Boots because they are extremely lightweight (making it easy for littles to walk), they are easy to put on, and they are rated to -50°C! *bonus - they are Canadian*
OUTERWEAR
If you can, please choose one piece snow and rain suits.
The reason I recommend these is because they keep kiddos extra warm and we eliminate snow getting up their back. This is usually a Mountain Warehouse purchase for us, but Costco and Amazon have great options as well. Also, don't forget Once Upon A Child , purchasing second hand is good for the planet, your wallet, and as an added bonus, kids grow so fast, most of the options available are almost brand new!
MITTENS
For littles, waterproof mittens are your best bet. Getting fingers in gloves is impossible, and we want warm hands when playing in the snow. If you can, please have 2 pairs available just in case one gets wet. We love Carters and Costco for mittens!
HATS
Try to get hats that are double lined and have ear flaps aka trapper hats. We are also huge fans of balaclavas in the super cold months of winter as they provide full head and neck coverage, that is of couese if your little will tolerate it. There are many great options for hats, and surprisingly Dollarama has some of the best!
SCARVES VS NECK WARMERS
Scarves are not recommended as they pose a strangulation and chocking hazard. Please try to get double lined neck warmers unless your kiddo is wearing a balaclava. Carters and Dollarama have great neck warmer options.
